The Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre
Incorporated has cared for and treated thousands of birds since
1st August 1992, when it was first established. As founders of
the centre, we have 'clocked up' over 30 years experience working
with native birds, managing and running the centre with the help of
a small but dedicated team of volunteers. The centre's diverse
operations include:
Rescuing, caring for and rehabilitating over 1200 birds each
year.
Running education programmes for approximately 6000 school
children who visit the centre each year.
Conducting birdlife education programmes in some of
Northland's more remote schools.
Lecturing groups of adults about the centre and its
conservation work.
Fostering environmental consciousness in Northland's
communities.
Educating local landowners on wild birds and care of their
habitat.
Helping save the kiwi by supporting the Department of
Conservation and many Northland Landcare groups in their work
associated with kiwi recovery
Provide ongoing care of birds that cannot be released.
Providing free access to the centre for the public. The
centre is also wheelchair friendly.

It's a sad fact that many of New Zealand's endemic and native
birds are at risk. Tragically, even our national icon, the kiwi, is
threatened with extinction unless we act now.
As a non-profit, registered and incorporated society with
charitable status we receive no government funding, and our income
relies solely on donations, grants and sponsorship.
But with your support we can continue to make a real difference
and care for Northland's birdlife. |
